Mathemba Mabija
Hailing from the Eastern Cape, Mr. Mathemba Mabija has made significant contributions to the National Teachers’ Union while based professionally in KwaZulu-Natal. His leadership and dedication have had a lasting impact on both provinces, particularly strengthening NATU’s presence in his home province.
Mr. Mabija began his journey with NATU at the Richmond Branch, where he served as Chairperson, demonstrating strong leadership in grassroots union activities. He later rose to the position of Regional Chairperson for the Pietermaritzburg Region, taking on greater responsibilities in coordinating union efforts across the province.
During his tenure as Regional Chairperson, he served as a negotiator for NATU in KwaZulu-Natal, effectively advocating for teachers’ rights and welfare.
In 2022, he was elected Vice President for Conditions of Service at the National Elective Conference. In this role, he represented NATU as a National Negotiator at both the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) and the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC). He also led NATU’s Legal Section, enhancing the union’s capacity to manage cases by overseeing a team of skilled Case Managers.
In 2025, Mr. Mabija was elected General Secretary at the National Elective Conference. He continues to steer NATU’s strategic direction and national advocacy with the same dedication that has defined his career.
