As schools settle into the new academic year, the National Teachers’ Union (NATU) continues to prioritise robust administrative processes, constitutional integrity, accurate membership records, enhanced member benefits, and a vibrant programme of national activities.

During a recent National Council Meeting held on 6 February 2026 at Imbizo Hall in Empangeni, General Secretary Mathemba Mabija presented a detailed update on key administrative matters. The presentation highlighted ongoing efforts to implement resolutions from the 2025 National Conference while unveiling the union’s official 2026 Almanac — a carefully planned calendar of events designed to build leadership capacity, foster unity, promote professional development, and celebrate the teaching profession. 

One of the core focus areas was the finalisation of constitutional amendments approved at the 2025 conference. These changes are being systematically incorporated into the existing 2023 Constitution (as previously amended). This exercise reaffirms NATU’s commitment to honouring member decisions made in democratic conference settings and maintaining a clear, accurate governing framework. 

A major administrative priority remains the accuracy of NATU’s national membership database. Following a nationwide data collection exercise launched via circular on 9 October 2025, regions, branches, and School Building Representatives (SBRs) were asked to verify and submit comprehensive membership details from schools across the country. The union stressed that incomplete data collection limits its ability to provide full services and benefits—most critically, the Death Benefit—to all eligible members and their families. NATU’s Head Office continues to urge all regional and branch leaders, as well as school representatives, to submit any outstanding data forms without delay. Full and accurate membership records are essential for organisational strength, financial sustainability, and ensuring no educator is left without union protection during difficult times.

In line with a popular resolution from the 2025 conference, NATU is actively preparing to relaunch Natu Tours, including sought-after cruise ship experiences. The CEB has already constituted a dedicated coordinating committee to manage logistics, planning, and member communication. Tours are scheduled to take place between now and March 2027. Regular updates on packages, destinations, pricing, and registration will be shared with leaders and members, offering valuable opportunities for relaxation, collegial networking, and professional renewal.

The highlight of the presentation was the official unveiling of the 2026 NATU Almanac—the union’s annual roadmap of national events and activities curated by the Central Executive Board for the benefit of members nationwide. Since its establishment over a century ago, NATU has consistently used structured national programmes to empower educators, strengthen organisational structures, and promote cultural and sporting camaraderie among teachers. These events span professional training on education laws, grassroots leadership development for SBRs, physical wellness through sports, cultural celebration, provincial governance processes, and strategic executive planning. Members are encouraged to diarise dates and participate actively—whether in person or via hybrid formats where offered.

NATU remains steadfast in its mission: “Teach the children of the Nation like never before and bring joy to the classroom.” Through diligent administrative work, constitutional fidelity, accurate membership systems, exciting member benefits such as tours, and a full programme of developmental and unifying events in 2026, the union continues to serve and strengthen South Africa’s teaching community.
